Yashar Farmanara announced as Elite 15 Head Coach for 2016/2017 season

yashwebsitecircleWEST VANCOUVER

Spartan Sport Group is pleased to announce that Yashar Farmanara will be the head coach of the program’s inaugural Elite 15 team in the 2016/2017 season.

“Our program coaches are required to be dedicated and passionate, with a desire to build a positive culture and teach the game with tremendous impact for our student athletes. In my experience with Yashar there is no one that will work harder and devote more to the success of each player on that team. Yashar has a strong knowledge of the game and what it takes to get to the next level” shared Willie Desjardins, Senior Program Director. “I believe he will create an outstanding environment and program as part of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League, and expose students to the necessary habits required to play at a higher level – whether that is Junior A, WHL, or NCAA.”

Farmanara is a native of Vancouver, and amassed 310 games in the WHL for Seattle, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat before moving onto Western University, playing CIS hockey and competing for a National Championship with the Mustangs. He has also represented Canada on an international stage, helping his team capture a bronze medal at the 2011 Winter Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey.

A back injury prematurely ended his professional career, and for the past three years Yashar has been coaching the Midget A1 Hollyburn Huskies, competing in 2 Final Fours along with a Provincial Championship. He has played for a number of coaches with professional and collegiate experience, including Willie Desjardins in Medicine Hat and Western University’s Clark Singer (7 time OUA Coach of the Year and CIS Coach of the Year in 2002).

Farmanara reiterated the optimism for this program’s first Elite-15 team: “It’s very exciting to see young players that are motivated to get to the next level. Our goal as a team will be to win a championship, and the only way to do that is to continuously work and believe in the process. It’s not enough to only be proficient on the ice. The more confident and motivated you are in all areas of your life, whether it be academics, community involvement, or mental wellness, the better chance you have to be successful in anything you pursue, including hockey.”

Yashar will be joining an already strong supplementary coaching staff that consists of skills coach Ryan Kerr, assistant coach Paul Reinhart, goaltending coach Jeff Battah, and strength and conditioning coach Brad Kahn. Spartan Sport Group is expected to announce the remainder of their coaching staff prior to their evaluation camp on May 7th and 8th in North Vancouver.

Ryan Kerr joins staff as skills consultant

Spartan Sport Group is proud to announce the addition of another key member to its skills staff. Ryan will join in both the U16 and U18 programs, working with athletes on puck skills, puck movement, quickness, and conditioning.

Ryan is a former 1st overall WHL draft pick to the Prince George Cougars. He played over 220 games in the Western Hockey League before moving on to attend York University, where he attained his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration while both playing and doing strength and conditioning for the York Lions men’s hockey team.

Ryan has spent the past year in his hometown of North Vancouver doing both on-ice and off-ice training for hockey players. He spent the 2015/2016 season as a coach for the North Shore Winter Club Bantam A2 hockey team while doing skills work with players on the North Shore. He is also the head coach for the North Shore Warriors spring hockey program as well as coaching in the summer hockey program at North Shore Winter Club.

“Ryan brings an excellent work ethic and intensity to our program. He has a wealth of knowledge to help our players both on and off the ice and is extremely well respected in the hockey community. I’m proud to have Ryan as a part of our program in his capacity as one of our skills consultants.” – Yashar Farmanara, Athletic Director

Athlete Scholarship Program Established With Major Donation

The Spartan Sport Group is excited to announce the establishment of their player scholarship fund with a private donation of $125,000. This will enable and propel the Spartan Sport Group to run a long term endowment fund for the benefit of their student athletes for years to come.

Nathan Fischer, Director of Development had this to share

“This is an incredibly generous contribution, providing a very strong foundation to build from. It also illustrates that our program philosophy and components of delivery is valued by a broader community. We know there are great people and organizations who believe in what we are doing, and we are extremely grateful for their support.”

The donor has requested to remain anonymous. All scholarship funds received will be distributed to students of need and who exhibit leadership and personal development goals aligned with program deliverables.
